About

Research Statement:
Souvick, a PhD student, is working on three-dimensional liquid transport on fibrous substances. How can one best manipulate liquid transport using the combined effect of Darcy pressure gradient, Laplace pressure gradient along with wettability patterning is the prime focus of his research.
Previous Research Experience:
Souvick did his undergraduate studies from Mechanical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India. Following that, Souvick was in a program between Jadavpur University, India and Virginia Polytechnic and State University, USA which resulted in him obtaining a MS (Thesis title: Why do mosquitoes use two modes of drinking? An analytical test of a blockage clearing hypothesis) from Virginia Tech and a PhD from Jadavpur University (Thesis title: Study of instability in a swirling annular liquid sheet).
Activities/Hobbies outside of research:
Souvick is interested in entrepreneurship and commercializing research. As part of that, Souvick is serving as a commercialization and strategy consultant at EnterpriseWorks, Chicago in Spring 2015. Souvick also has interest in “playing with lights”-be with experiments in lab or outside. As part of his interest in photography, he was a part of the Jadavpur University Photography Club and participated in different national and international contests. Souvick also convened a national and an international photography contest during the undergraduate years. Souvick is also interested in keeping up-to-date with progress in science and technology in different sectors. Coupling of these different fields in form of interdisciplinary research is crucial for solving real world problems. Realizing the potential of such interdisciplinary research in years to come, Souvick was the co-founder of the first “Interdisciplinary Research Honor Society” in Virginia Tech. Also, Souvick loves reading (about anything), listening to music (genre does not matter, as long as he likes it!).
